Proper Equipment

Your equipment is a make-or-break for your business. You should always be willing to invest. I see most people run into problems because they skimped on the correct equipment.

Reliable equipment enables you to care for your reptiles better.

Fortunately, racking systems are well-priced these days—making it easier for hobbyists to enter the market.

I also recommend adding a heating and cooling source to control the room's ambient temperature. Mimic the female's natural environment as much as possible so that it is easier for her to thermoregulate.

Choose Strategic Projects

It's essential to plan your projects a couple of years ahead strategically.

My honest advice is that all collections should have at least one recessive project when starting your Ball Python collection.

One of the best and most valuable investments I have made to date is my original Pastel Batman (Bruce Wayne). When I purchased this male, there weren't many strong Clown combos available. This was a great asset to my collection because I had other recessive females to kick-start some double recessive projects—namely, Hypo, Ultramel & Pied. Leading to the next piece of advice…

Move on to double or triple recessive project animals as soon as possible.

Double and triple recessive Het females are valuable to any collection, Ball Python collections in particular. I have had some great projects come to light by breeding with Double Het animals.

Recessive females are important for future double and triple recessive projects. Double or triple recessive females will help you move into quadruple recessive animals—and we haven't seen many triple or quadruple recessive combos produced!

Option 1

Purchase recessive females and aim to grow them to maturity, ensuring that your males are compatible. 

From this, you will produce high-end babies. But don't expect to generate revenue for at least two years.

Option 2

Purchase any high-end recessive male with females that will create visual Double Hets. You will see revenue a little faster with this method. Remember that your business performs as well as your reputation—so don't put off the high-end options too long.

Social Media

I strongly suggest that all breeders—upcoming or established—have some social media presence. This is where you can interact with other reptile enthusiasts and establish yourself among the reptile community. That's probably the best thing you can do!

The reptile community is invaluable. You will build friendships, increase your knowledge, build an international network and, ultimately, grow your client base.

Over the years, I have established many meaningful friendships. It is encouraging and has helped me to earn my reputation.
